Volcanologists Gathered in Sopron for the 7th AdriaArray Workshop

From 17 to 20 March 2026, Sopron (Hungary) hosted the 7th AdriaArray Workshop. One of the key themes of the meeting was the role of volcanism in the geodynamic evolution of the region, with a particular focus on Cenozoic volcanism across the wider Adria‑Array domain, extending from the Pannonian Basin through the Dinarides to the Southern Alps.

The workshop was organized by the HUN‑REN Institute of Earth Physics and Space Science (HUN‑REN EPSS). Upon the invitation of Prof. Thomas Meier and István János Kovács, international experts working on magmatic and volcanic processes in the region were brought together. The aim of the initiative was to foster new professional connections and collaborations, and to promote an integrated approach combining seismological, geodynamic, and magmatic research in order to improve our understanding of the Cenozoic geological evolution of the Adria‑Array region.

Our research group contributed to the workshop with three presentations. Szabolcs Harangi delivered an overview lecture on the Neogene–Quaternary volcanism of the Carpathian–Pannonian region and its geodynamic relationships. This was followed by presentations by Réka Lukács and Emese Pánczél in the session “Tectonics and Magmatic Activity in the Adria‑Array Region”, focusing on the links between magmatism and tectonic processes within the region.
